Since independence in 1960, Chad has suffered from instability and conflict. Chad is among the poorest countries in the world, with over half of the population living below the poverty line and more than one third living in extreme poverty. Chad’s growth rates since 2003 have been largely driven by the petroleum sector, and the economy is currently heavily dependent on oil. The Bank seeks to leverage the impact of all public resources on the lives of the people of Chad. This is done by strengthening public financial management systems; accompanying government efforts to improve the provision of key social services (health, education, water); economic diversification; and investments in regional integration.
