SWAZILAND

The Kingdom of Swaziland, territorially the third smallest and among the least populous of countries on the African continent, is also one of the few International Bank for Reconstruction and Development borrowers, based on its Lower Middle Income Country status. Today, Swaziland is at the epicenter of an HIV/AIDS pandemic. The majority of the population – about 75 percent – is employed in subsistence agriculture on Swazi Nation Land which suffers from low productivity and under-investment. The World Bank has been ramping up its program in Swaziland after a long hiatus of very limited engagement. Its strategy focuses on providing support to the government in three key areas: fighting HIV/AIDS, improving governance, and increasing competitiveness.

Active financed activities as of March 28, 2012.
