The World Bank has been active in China since 1980. Today, China’s portfolio is one of the largest in the Bank. World Bank projects support many sectors of the economy, with infrastructure (transport, energy, urban development) accounting for more than half of the total portfolio, and rural development, social sectors (health, education, social protection), and direct poverty reduction programs comprising the remainder. Roughly three-quarters of Bank supported activities have environmental objectives and a strong environment focus runs across sectors with environment-related projects in energy, urban wastewater, water supply and sanitation, and rural development.

Active financed activities as of March 28, 2012.
