Mongolia has made significant achievements since its dual transition to democracy and a market economy in 1990, including a strong macroeconomic performance, high literacy and education levels, advanced public financial management and a decline in the incidence of poverty. Since 1991, the World Bank has financed investments in rural development, education, governance, improving the livability of the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, ensuring sound management within the mining sector, sustainable infrastructure development in southern Mongolia, environmental protection, policy development and air pollution abatement measures.
