While the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s (FYR Macedonia) growth in the first half of the decade was below regional averages, real GDP expanded more vigorously between 2006 and 2008, though with only modest improvements in living standards. The challenge facing FYR Macedonia is to create a foundation for strong and sustainable growth by creating a more diverse, competitive, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable economy. The World Bank has been actively supporting the country in strengthening its competitiveness for sustained economic growth, improving the business environment, strengthening human capital, improving its transport and energy infrastructure, and supporting the decentralization process.
