Serbia is a middle-income country with a population of around 7.5 million and great potential for rapid economic development, as the country is endowed with natural resources and fertile and arable agricultural land. Serbia is also well positioned for development as a transportation hub, given its strategic location at the crossroads of major road and rail routes in Southeastern Europe. Most economic activity is concentrated in services (about 66 percent of GDP), industry (22 percent), and agriculture (12 percent). Major challenge for Serbia is to maintain economic stability, create employment, reverse recent increase in poverty rate, and accelerate EU integration process.
