UZBEKISTAN

Uzbekistan is a resource rich low-middle income country accounting for nearly half of Central Asia’s population. Following independence in 1991, the Government’s state-led development strategy has delivered economic growth, driven by strong export earnings from natural gas, gold and cotton and large scale investment in industry, infrastructure, basic education and health. Gradual sector reforms have eased social costs of the transition. The country was relatively unaffected by the recent global economic downturn due to increased exports of key commodities and its limited vulnerability to external shocks. Since the country joined the institution in 1992, the Bank’s assistance has helped the country improve primary health care facilities for some 4 million people in rural areas;helped people gain access to safe and reliable drinking water; and contributed to improving agricultural performance providing access to rural finance and supporting irrigation and drainage works. The Bank also contributed in increasing transparency in public resource utilization, developing leasing and housing finance sectors in line with international best practice, and providing improved irrigation and drainage on 100,000 ha of irrigated land.

Active financed activities as of March 28, 2012.
