The Extractive Industries Map of Ghana provides an online, interactive mapping platform that gives access to and visualizes information about the mining, oil, and gas sectors in Ghana. The idea for mapping the extractive industries in Ghana arose in response to the 2007 offshore oil discovery. The excitement over potential benefits to the country was tempered by a concern that Ghana might come under the ‘resource curse’ that has afflicted other resource-rich developing nations. To have a voice in the development of the sector, citizens need tools that provide a way to discover and interpret information related to these activities. A visitor to the Extractive Industries Map of Ghana can explore mine production, national and district-level government revenues from industrial mining, socioeconomic indicators, donor-funded projects, geological information, and links to more information such as contracts, company information and sustainability reports.

After seeing the preliminary version of the map, stakeholders in Ghana explained they had never seen a platform centralizing these different sources of information. This mapping platform provides a research and planning tool that development partners, civil society organizations and policy makers can use to investigate the relationship between extractive activities and social and economic conditions.  Even members of the government and the private sector became interested in the potential of using the map to improve governance in the sector.  With access to tools that increase transparency such as the Extractive Industries Map, decision makers can become informed and develop a louder voice in guiding the impacts of the new oil sector.
