Economic and social reforms, especially in the electricity, telecommunications and social protection sectors, top the agenda of the new Lebanese government which took office in mid-July 2011 after six months of political stalemate. One of the main challenges for Lebanon remains short-term economic management. The World Bank’s strategy focuses on five specific areas over the next four years: (1) ensuring sustained fiscal stability and improved public financial management; (2) building a competitive business environment; (3) improving basic infrastructure services; (4) raising the quality of education and; (5) expanding a sustainable and inclusive social protection system.
