YEMEN, REP.

Yemen is a country of deeply-rooted traditions, which have existed for thousands of years in a fragile natural environment. Its natural resources are limited, notably water is scarce, and arable land is limited. While the country enjoyed some oil wealth over the last 20 years, its exploited resources are and declining. Its GNI per capita stood at about $950 in 2008 and, despite some modest gains on urban poverty, about 40 percent of the population is poor. Significant progress has been made over the last few years, but living conditions for most of the 22 million Yemenis remain difficult. In light of the current political and security environment in Yemen, the World Bank has suspended disbursements under the Yemen portfolio as of July 28, 2011 until further notice.

Active financed activities as of March 28, 2012.
