The Republic of Maldives is made up of 1,190 islands in 20 atolls spread over 900 km in the Indian Ocean. The country’s population of approximately 321,000 people lives in 198 of these islands, 70% of which are inhabited by less than 1,000 people. With an estimated per capita Gross National Income (GNI) of $2,410 in 2004 (up from $2,010 in 2000), the Maldives has the highest GNI in the South Asia region. The Bank’s assistance program has focused on the main productive sectors (fisheries and tourism), their related infrastructure, human resource development (particularly education), building government capacity, and post-tsunami recovery and reconstruction. The Bank is increasingly supporting the government’s investment in human capital.
